Just how stupid are laptop designers?

Mini-rant Cooked plums, anyone?
LAPTOPS spend most of their time on, err, laps. Sometimes they'll be on the sofa next to you; sometimes on the carpet; sometimes on the passenger seat of the car; sometimes even on a bed.
The things rarely get used on desks, so why the hell do designers invariably design them to suck cold air in from underneath? Nine times out of ten the inlet is blocked by clothing or soft furnishings and the thing has to throttle back to avoid toasting the CPU.
How hard would it be to suck the air in from the side, or even the top, to enable the things to run at full speed without setting fire to the soft furnishings or roasting your crown jewels?
I hasten to add that the last point is not something I have personally experienced. Honest. µ
