GRAND THEFT AUTO IV looks set to become the fastest-selling computer game in the short history of fast-selling computer games.

The controversially-criminal romp flogged 609,000 copies on its first day of release, ringing tills to the tune of £24.4million ($48.5 million).

It beat equally controversially-criminal romp GTA: San Andreas, into second place. That title sold 501,000 copies in 24 hours in October 2004.

And retailers report sales have held up all week.

The game appeared on both Playstation and Xbox at the same time but has struggled to run at all on some varieties of hardware.

Rockstar has said it is working on a fix.

Disc-counters at Chart Track said the game not only notches up the highest sales for any game in its first 24 hours, it also outsold anything that came before it on either PS3 and Xbox.

It beat Gran Turismo into second place on the PS3 and even overhauled Microsoft's Halo 3 on the 360. µ
