Samsung gets writ from AMD over fab tech
And one video technology patent
AMD is suing Korean chip giant Samsung for alleged breach of five patents relating to fabrication technology and one to displays.
The case started in a Northern California district court a few weeks ago. AMD wants a jury trial to decide whether Samsung breached US patent numbers 5,545,592; 4,737,830; 5,248,293;5,559,990; 5,377,200; and 6,784,879.
These relate largely to fabrication technology – the first for example is called Nitrogen Treatment for Metal-Silicide Contact; the second Integrated Circuit Structure having Compensating Means for Self Inductance Effects; Insulated Gate Field Effect Device with a Smoothly Curved Depletion Boundary in the Vicinity of the Channel-Free Zone (whew!); Memories with Burst Mode Access; and Power Saving Feature for Components Having Built-In Testing Logic; and Method and Apparatus for Providing Control of Background Video. This last was an ATI patent.
AMD alleges many of the patents are used in Samsung DRAM, SRAM and NAND flash chips. It said that it contact Samsung in April 2006 to negotiate licences and gave the chaebol a Powerpoint presentation showing how its products breached AMD patents.
Patent 5,559,990 is used in memory chips, cell phones, MP3 players, TVs and printers, said AMD. The last patent, 6,784,879 is breached by Samsung in its LN-TI953H TV and other devices, alleges AMD. µ

AMD = SCO?
Looks like Hector is turning AMD into another SCO. Though I don't see where they are getting the money to actually sue anyone.Patents are a gigantic mess.
Welcome to 2008 when the lawyers and corporations have become so mad with power they will sue at the drop of a hat.Why not sue me for making a comment on the internet?
Dangerous ground...
...for AMD.If Samsung actually has infringed a patent it may suddenly find it cheaper to settle the matter not by buying itself out of it, but by buying AMD into itself....
AMD's new business model
Patent troll! They might make more money that way than they do making chips ... badly.Yea!! AMD SUCK!!
Screw AMD they should die already!! Let’s all buy from the honourable and infallible Intel, IBM, Motorola etc… and the world would be a better place for it! I mean wasn't it great when you could buy a mid ranged processor £500!?!Hah!
Yeah because Intel, Microsoft, IBM, Samsung etc etc… have never sued each other over patents. I agree maybe AMD is looking for cash. How does this equate to SCO? It’s over a complex set of patent tech, it’s not anything like the linux kernel. Plus AMD approached Samsung in 06! It’s been two years, it’s not like they didn’t try to work something out.
“but by buying AMD into itself” HELLO ever heard of the USA? The US government wouldn’t allow such a thing especially not now! As far as their concerned protectionism Is paramount above all else.
“Patent troll?” either you’re a Mac user or a moron, one onto the same.
Heh
Alex, if AMD dies, Intel will abuse of it's monopoly and will charge a premium price for their products, thanks to AMD, we're not using Lousy Pentium 4 processors anymore, Instead of writting juvenile and ignorant comments like that, go away and play with your Lego Blocks. Abraham, it's true that AMD is not in the best shape right now, but right now, it's doing quite a lot of money were the money is, in the midrange market with their HD 38X0 line, even in the AGP market were nVidia left them in the cold, so before posting senseless stuff, do research first!!!heh
Above poster, UNiX:Please reread Alex's comment again, slowly, and try to understand what he's trying to get at.
