GTA smashes sales records
We just wanna be bad
GRAND THEFT AUTO IV looks set to become the fastest-selling computer game in the short history of fast-selling computer games.
The controversially-criminal romp flogged 609,000 copies on its first day of release, ringing tills to the tune of £24.4million ($48.5 million).
It beat equally controversially-criminal romp GTA: San Andreas, into second place. That title sold 501,000 copies in 24 hours in October 2004.
And retailers report sales have held up all week.
The game appeared on both Playstation and Xbox at the same time but has struggled to run at all on some varieties of hardware.
Rockstar has said it is working on a fix.
Disc-counters at Chart Track said the game not only notches up the highest sales for any game in its first 24 hours, it also outsold anything that came before it on either PS3 and Xbox.
It beat Gran Turismo into second place on the PS3 and even overhauled Microsoft's Halo 3 on the 360. µ

Port plz
I love GTA, but I hope they port it to the PC like all previous releases. I don't own an Xbox 360 or PS3 and I do not intend to get one. I wouldn't hesitate in the least to buy a PC version though.Bloody PC version
If Rockstar don't release a PC version very soon, i will simply torrent it when it IS released, and play another decent game or two (or 3... 4 or 5) until they do.And companies wonder why people pirate software... sheesh!
12-Point Fix
I've had no problems yet on my 60GB, but here's Take-Two's 12-Point Fix for those less fortunate. Still no word on a fix for the Xbox version yet...1) Delete the game's install data. This is done via the PS3 options. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Game Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, from the menu select Delete. This will delete the game's install information.
2) Delete the game's save files. To delete any save files you will need to do the following. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Save Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, and from the context menu select Delete.
3) Disable your Internet connectivity for the PS3. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Settings' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Network Settings'. Now scroll down to the Internet connection option and press x, now select the disable option. Once this has been done unplug the ethernet cable if you are connecting to the Internet if using this.
4) Disable the console's information board. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Information Board', highlight this and press triangle. From the menu select 'Do not display' Press X to confirm this.
5) Disable Media Server functionality. Scroll to Settings, now scroll up / down to 'Network Settings' select Media Server connection. Once this has been done press triangle and change the option Disabled.
6) Delete all of the system's Internet cache. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Internet Browser', highlight this and press X. Once you browser opens press the triangle button once, from the new menu highlight the 'Tools' option and press X. Scroll down the menu until you reach 'Delete Cookies' and press X. Confirm the files deletion. Repeat this for 'Delete Cache'.
7 ) Turn off the PS3 screen saver. Use the cross media bar to scroll to 'Settings', select 'Display Settings'. Now highlight 'Screensaver' and set this to 'Do not use'.
8 ) Once this has been done, manually restart you PS3 by holding down the power button for 5 seconds it will beep once and then shut down. Release the power button and re-press it and hold for about 5 seconds. The system will then boot and reset all display settings. You will be prompted to reset your display settings to how you require them.
9) Once restarted please try the game again, you will be prompted to reinstall.
Once the game has started please turn off the following features:
1) The game's auto-save. Press Start, Game, and locate the Auto-save option. Turn this off.
2) Turn off the game's flicker filter. Press Start, Display and locate the Flicker Filter option. Turn this off.
3) Turn off the controller vibration feature. Press Start, Controls and locate the vibration option. Turn this off.
Yes
Of course Rockstar has a PC port ready to go, but the consoles always get this game first. It must be part of the contract between TT, Sony, and MS.Anyway,
just wait six months and it will be 39.99 for PC, (with better graphics and more fluid gameplay).
Consoles are cool, but they are really a waste of money if you are at all technologically inclined. The 360 was outdated before it arrived and the PS3 is about outdated now. This summer we'll again have graphics cards ready for the PC producing sweet graphics that a console cannot.
If Sony, or MS for that matter, where smarter they'd allow for an upgradeable console. Then you might really have to worry about the end of PC gaming, until that day comes... no worries.
I'd like to add a few GB of Ram to my PS3, but no luck there.
Improving the hard drive space is nice, but minimal really. Nvidia has been promising an upgradeable grfx socket for awhile now...
Think of how dumb it is to buy... just about anything (other than a PC which you can upgrade).
Especially terrrible purcahse are the iMac machines!
Apple upgrades the iMac so often you can practically return it within 30 days and get a better machine!
Why didn't the just put a nice 8800 grfx card in there to begin with?
Instead, thousands upon thousands of people have a crappy iMac, worse than that big old white one, and now they offer the 8800GS. In a few more months it'll be even better.
With a PC you get the best bang for your buck, you can run any OS, and play nearly every major game.
Finally, the dumbest thing, by far, is Apple still holding on to OS X and keeping it from PC users. There would be no better time than now, while Vista sucks, to release OS X on the world, but no... Apple would rather let people pirate their cracked software (which works very well) than sell it to the dirty PC users.
Stupid Apple.
Then again... you can buy a mac mini for just a little bit more than vista+office... hmm?
Smart Apple?
andrew is not writing GTA articles no more? good!
i actually didn't and will not get a GTA IV.for now.
i will just wait for the PC version, for sure its more stable, better graphics, way better online content (free vs membership fee for xbox360), and patches for more guns (may be), bigger map (may be).
but rock on GTA IV.
PC version
I would definitely buy the PC version it there would ever be one. This sucks!
And prosumebly the *stated* reason for not releasing a PC version is the higher cost of having to code for different hardware version... uhmm... you know.. cause they supposedly don't have such problems with console devices like ... uhhhmm... the PS3??Wonder just how much money/concessions it took to bribe them to skipping a PC version of the game. Of course it maybe be a smart idea of them not to release at the same time since any half sane person with a half decent comp. would rather buy it for pc then for a console.. this way they may be suckered into buying it again should it ever come out for pc.
Only way i would ever buy a console is if i know for sure i could mod it and download all old/current/new games of the 'net (you know.. pirate.. not buy) just to counteract any motion those greedy corporate bastards have of be thinking that locking people down with hardware & drm is going to make them more money.
Friggin PC version
I have almost done the unthinkable...After years of resisting & playing emulators the prospect of waiting 6 months for GTA IV seemed too heavy a burdon. I ALMOST bought a PS3 with GTA IV. A friend told me that his version had BUGS...bugs on a PS3...bugs on a console...well its not the first game to have bugs on console...but if the only thing going for a console is a game I like and it's buggy, well I'm not gonna buy, am I?
I'll wait for the PC version, and remain console-less. To hell with the PayStation & the Xbox 360 hardware toast edition.
Besides, auto aiming is for retards that need a mouse, but instead they have some stupid shtick.
There will be a PC version
I just called Take2. They couldn't give me specifics, but the rep did say that GTA IV is coming for the PC, and to keep an eye on the website. That's one future sale from me when it comes out!
GTA is one of the few games I'll buy without "trying" it first because I know I will love it.
Here's my problem with gangster games.
Real life gangsters see the games as validation of their lifestyle. They think that all the suburban wannabees, just wish they were them.If Rockstar did a period piece criminal game, it would not have the same impact. Real gangsters, like the loser who robbed me at gunpoint a few years ago, do not want to be the characters in "Gangs of New York", they want to be "Scarface".
As an avid fantasy and SF CRPG, RTS and occasional FPS gamer, I encourage games in our home, and look forward to the day when our son can join my wife and I in LOTR Online, but we'd never allow a game like GTA in our home.
Let's make gangster games boring for the real life losers who live that lifestyle. Set them in a time period, past or future, that does not mimic the symbols, the slang and the bling of real life criminals.
