Doom 4 on its way

Chainsaws at the ready

ID SOFTWARE has announced that it is hiring developers to build a new version of Doom 4.

While many people would love to see another version of Doom, with the latest range of 3D graphics many punters would be wondering where the plot will go.

The Doom 3 expansion, Resurrection, had a pretty final ending so it will mean the script writers will have to pull out a really interesting plot device to get the guns firing again.

Details of the project are fairly sketchy. There is no indication how long it will be before it gets in the shops or what it is going to look like. Chances are it will stretch systems to their limits. µ

Story??

I've yet to meet anybody who plays doom for the story.

Tech5

Doom 4 will be made using ID's new Tech5 Engine, the same engine that "Rage" is using.

The tech 5 engine uses ID's mega textures and the engine is a thing of beauty.

I shall await the narrow corridors and scripted monster spawning with great anticipation.

Back to the roots please!!

"Story??

I agree completley, Id need to go back to their roots, make a real sequel to Doom I & II.. rooms full of monsters etc.. not dark halls with single monsters, thats not cutting it!

Please make a real Doom game this time!!

We need a prequel

So the "storyline" has closed... so write a prequel. Easy.

Can they write a decent game that captures the visceral terror delivered by the original Doom? Very hard.

But here's a clue: it's not the graphics, it's the music, lighting and timing that make the experience.

My 2c worth.

N/A

Although a modern graphic Doom 4 would be nice, it isn’t going to look that much better than today’s games if they spread it across every system.

Doom 3 engine took advantage of PCs available at the time, Doom 4 will most likely also appear on 360 & PS3 and hence will be based around their hardware.

The sale point of Doom is ‘good graphics’ and mowing down the forces of hell with futuristic weapons, how well will it do when it looks like any other console game?

Erm, I loved the plot...

Man, I must be really sad but I loved the plot of Doom3, and by that I mean the premise and the background narratives you'd hear on your PDA. Hmm, guess that's not really the same thing as a plot though is it...doh!

<i>"Doom has a plot?"</i>

Unfortunately, yes... I liked Doom style games much more when they didn't. Cut scenes don't add anything to the experience for me.

Perhaps I'll be sh*tting my pants in Hi-Def now...

Can't wait to see it.

LOL @ Drew.

True enough.

Was a long time since I heard a Dallas reference. Nice one mate.
What a crappy ending that was...

What kind of gameplay

AFAIK, Rage engine is supposed to work with the current consoles too so I don't think it will be that demanding. Many companies like Epic have already realized that making high end games isn't that good idea anymore.

As for the game, I just love Doom but I don't understand what people want from it. Nowadays everything's supposed to be like Half-Life which are boring IMO and Doom wouldn't fit at all like that. Classic Doom brought the old Doom feeling back to Doom 3 and I'd love to see more of that, but surely it wouldn't work in a commercial game anymore. So what do people want then?

what?

What happened to that game they were working on?, the one with a Madmax theme?...i dont care about another doom :/

Can't Wait

John Carmack is the pioneering guru and Doom has a great history. Just picked up the Doom3 expansion and will buy Doom 4 as soon as it hits the shelves. I watched a Demo from the Mac expo done by Carmack on a maxed out Powermac about his tech 5 engine technology, the man is brilliant.
Hopefully he won't cave in (I doubt it) like Bioware has and fill it with DRM crap like they are planning to do with Mass Effect that will not be installed on my PC.
I think MS hates John anyway because of his open GL support instead of their proprietary DX DRM stuff. Vista has no open GL support like XP did.

release date

Since is will be asked a million times, may I be the first to inquire:

When will it be done:)

But are their nails?

I used to play Doom (and quake) for the ambiance and ID gave me my first good listening to Mr Reznor's music.

Imho the should get him back on-board for #4.

It will save me having to turn off the music and use winamp anyway.

True...

But at least Doom 3 had a better story than Crysis.

Yay!

Can't wait for the first 2 levels of doom 4. Maybe the third. I'm sure we'll sick of playing it by level 4 if it's anything like doom 3.

Solution #2

"It was all a horrible cheese dream."

Somehow, though, I don't think Doom4 will feature the Wrong Trousers. But wouldn't that be something?

Can't Wait

I can't wait to see it in action. ID's titles are always a sight to behold when they are released and I am sure Doom 4 will be no different. Just because it uses ID tech 5 (which is console friendly) doesnt mean it can't look considerably better on PC. Knowing Carmack, he will get the most out of the technology available to him.

I feel sorry for Dr Indiana Jones. He is the most famous archaeologist on the planet, and yet no one seems to take his temples remotely seriously.

Pitch black != lighting effects

I quit playing Doom3 at the bit where the torch packs in. It was bad enough with the "torch or weapon but not both" rubbish (yes yes, mods etc) but I play an FPS to SEE things. Not stare at black on black guessing which way to go and randomly shooting in the vain hope of hitting things I can't see.
Put some lights in! Don't give me that realism argument either, it's a game - suspension of disbelief etc etc remember?
