Subject: AMD Organizational Update

Later today (May 12), AMD will announce today a reshaping of its organization and bolstering of our management team to lead in our core x86 microprocessor and graphics businesses. As part of this reshaping, AMD is announcing the formation of a new Central Engineering organization along with the appointment of 24-year AMD veteran Randy Allen to lead our Computing Solutions Group. Both organizations will report directly into AMD President and COO Dirk Meyer.

In his new role as Senior Vice President, Computing Solutions Group, Randy will be responsible for the development and management of AMD’s broad and growing portfolio of consumer and commercial microprocessor solutions and platforms. Mario Rivas is leaving to pursue new opportunities.

The newly formed Central Engineering organization will be co-led by Corporate Vice President, Design Engineering Jeff Verheul and the newly appointed Chekib Akrout. Chekib comes to AMD from Freescale Semiconductor, where he was Vice President of Design Technology. While at Freescale, his organization was responsible for defining and supporting all design methodologies and flows, developing differentiated tools and intellectual property (IP), providing common engineering compute systems and computer-aided design (CAD) IT support.

The Central Engineering leadership team will have the charter to define the company’s technology roadmap, in partnership with Dirk and the business unit general managers and CTOs, and develop the system architecture and foundational IP blocks that will be leveraged across the business units. The strategic focus of Central Engineering will include all of AMD’s product offerings. However, in the near term, the group’s tactical execution focus will be largely specific to the needs of CSG. This new organization will help AMD further focus and streamline our engineering efforts, build and maintain a strong roadmap for customers, and ultimately, differentiate ourselves with superior, innovative solutions.

Additionally, AMD also promoted Allen Sockwell to senior vice president and Chief Talent Officer responsible for developing AMD’s leadership assets and employee talent. Michel Cadieux, formerly in that role, has also left AMD to pursue new opportunities.

One pillar at a time.

This reminds me of a facinating game I used to play when I was a kid. I would "build" towers out of cards. By placing one car against another to form a triangle & then two triangles to support a horizontally laid card on top etc.

I would build and build and build, which obviously took time and practice. Once you get good at it you can sit around making towers out of cards.

After that became easy I moved on to a different game, pulling out the cards to see if the structure will still stand. I'm sure many people have done this...in fact there is a common game for this with bricks called "Jenga"

I was suprised to see that AMD play Jenga as well.

One block here, one block there...which block will make the tower tumble?
